The Check is in the Mail

With the ever expanding financial problems in the US and the World, state governments are having trouble coming up with the money they have promised to the unemployed. Not least of which is New York State.

Danger: High Fructose Corn Syrup

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that the consumption of high fructose corn syrup was just over 40 pounds per year, per person, as of 2007. It accounts for roughly 41 percent of all caloric sweeteners consumed in the U.S.

Is it as safe as we have been told?

I was kind of shocked to read this poorly-constructed editorial in today’s Democrat and Chronicle. The current debate is over the drinking age and whether it should be lowered to 18. The answer is simple, really. Of course it should! I’ve been abroad to Italy and seen first hand a country where there is no drinking age at all (technically it is 18, but not enforced), and contrary to common knowledge, there are not hoards of drunken teens in the street. If anything, as a 19 and 20 year-old at the time, I was usually …

Walk in to any job interview, casual gathering or networking event and one of the first questions that will be asked of you is: “What’s your specialty?” I think this is a terrible question. Don’t get me wrong, I think having something you’re really great at is a good thing, but why stop there? Why be satisfied with being a great salesperson and a decent couch potato? To me, a much better question would be “What are some of the things you do best?” which should be followed immediately with “What do you hope to learn how to do soon?” …

This is a very disturbing short video about the evils perpetuated by Halliburton in Iraq. Unfortunately this is only one story of many that I have heard so far, but this may be one of the most dangerous situations we know about. How do you feel knowing that our troops are being treated this way? I am certainly concerned. To all you Neocon followers out there who claim to support the troops and love America, perhaps it’s time to wake up to the fact that Halliburton doesn’t really care about the troops one bit. Oh yeah, here’s the kicker: they’re …

Another cute fat kitty.
Hi readers, I would like to take a moment to comment on a strange phenomenon–that of “fat cat.” More people have gotten to our website using search engine terms like “fat cat,” “obese cat,” “overweight kitty,” etc. than any other Google search terms. I’m glad that people are getting to the article, but I am almost positive that once they arrive at riseupRochester, they realize that my article, “The New Pariahs” has nothing to do with fat cats. I just put in that picture because I thought it would make the lighten up the tone of the …

Despite the fact that so many Americans are overweight, it still seems that the obese are a disliked group in the U.S. Just turn on the t.v. and you’ll see some skinny woman who is being diagnosed by Dr. Phil as having an “aversion to fat people.” People love to criticize the overweight and how they are costing everyone money, and how they are an eye-sore, but it is difficult to lose weight. And there are probably very few overweight people out there who don’t look in the mirror everyday and feel bad enough without the rest of …

“Survival of the Fittest”
I don’t know about you all, but I’m getting a little sick of “green guilt.” Everywhere we turn, someone is telling us that we are sucking life from the planet; that human beings are leaches. In some ways, I agree that humans have perhaps made too large of a foot print on this planet. But, it is ridiculous that the media has co-opted environmentalism, turning health and environmental consciousness into a contest to keep up with the Joneses and be the most “green.”
I am a consumer, especially of cosmetic products. I have been looking for natural products …

Today the Democrat and Chronicle ran a ‘Friday Faceoff’ between two people, one for medical hemp and one against it. I believe these were both terrible articles because the pro article conceded too much ground and was completely unaware of the history of the plant and the spectrum of uses that the plant offers. Just Google all of the ways the hemp plant was used before it was made illegal in this country. I am also upset because the con article completely misrepresented the dangers of the plant and stigmatized all people who use it. Why are people so ignorant …
