Renaissance Square is (Almost) Dead

We finally have some good news when it comes to the Renaissance Square project: the theatre part of the project is almost dead. Yesterday Chuck Schumer announced that the project would move forward without the theatre, and unless the funding gap was quickly closed the theatre would be scrapped all together. This is what we have been waiting for.

Unfortunately, the no-bus station and no-MCC Campus people won’t be satisfied, but the largest waste of money has been spared. I strongly doubt the additional 55 million dollars needed can be raised in these economic conditions, so it seems like we’re out of the woods.

It still bothers me, however, that so much money is being thrown at a new downtown campus for MCC when the arguments for it seem so week. Even more damning is the fact that the vacancy rate downtown averages over 21%, so it amazes me that the MCC campus couldn’t occupy any of these spaces. Why is it that our city insists on going ahead with projects that are underfunded, unpopular and unproven?

Either way, I’m glad to see the theatre is (almost) dead. Despite outrageous advertising campaigns starring local celebrities, Rochesterians did not open their wallets to fund the project. It’s a victory to see that the government won’t be using its monopoly on the use of force to extract the necessary funds against our will.

I agree with this project as I think it will create jobs in the Rochester area. Architects and engineers for drawings, construction jobs, and permeate jobs after the job is complete.

It might be good for someone directly employed in one of those fields, but for everyone else they will be worse off. Every other project like this has ended up costing taxpayers more money at the end of the day.

I am for this project because of what it brings to downtown. Education. Transit. The Arts. The project was designed to keep operating costs for these public services at a minimum. True, all of these entities need taxes to provide the service. Why not get the added benefit of FEDERAL GOVERNMENT INVESTMENT into our community? Transit downtown means easier to get to the jobs, education means kids can do those jobs (hopefully), and the arts are for those of us who pay the taxes, but enjoy the smaller concerts, etc. that a new PAC will bring to the area. Right now, many of them skip Rochester due to lack of venue…

If we don't take advantage, i hear Dorothy and Toto want to chase federal funds to build a High Speed Rail for $5BILLION that will get them to the wonderful world of Oz - er, Albany… Now that's a real sinker for the community…
