7 Ideas for a Gray Day in Rochester

11 December 2008 11 Comments Posted by: Andrew S.

Just because the weather in Rochester is gray, it doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the beautiful scenery of our city. Here are some of my ideas for how to spend a gray day in Rochester - I’d probably be doing most of these if I didn’t have so much homework to do in the next couple of weeks.

1) Head to a park.

You might need an umbrella and some boots for this one, but be sure to bring your camera. Everyone’s got pictures of Highland Park or the lake or canal on a sunny day, but what about during inclement weather? Your pictures will have an altogether different mood about them.

2) Head to the coffee shop.

This is a Rochester favorite for the evenings any day of the week, but if you’re free earlier in the day, why not head over then. Leave the computer at home (this one’s tough for me) and make friends with a barista or the Rochestarian next to you. Who knows, they’re probably pretty cool!

3) Go for a drive.

Round up some friends and family and punch in your destination in your GPS. Better yet, get lost and explore some of the towns that surround Greater Rochester. Be careful if the roads are slippery, but there are probably going to be less people on the road. Once again, bring your camera! You might find some charming town or cool antique shop.

4) Head to Strong National Museum of Play.

It’s not just for kids, you know. Surprise someone with this fun date, but make sure to put on a costume while you read the books. Also, paying for the butterfly garden is well worth the money. Again, don’t forget the camera.

5) Check out a concert at the Eastman School of Music.

There are free or almost-free concerts nearly every day by Eastman students and community members. Many of these occur at Kilbourn Hall or Eatman Theatre, but there are others around the community as well. These are all featuring world-class students about to become world-class musicians and they deserve to have more well-attended concerts and recitals than they do. Make their day today!

6) Go to a star show at the Strasenburgh Planetarium.

This is one of those fun dates that we rarely think of going to unless guests are in from out of town, but why not? Besides star shows, they also play films about dinosaurs and sharks (and other fun creatures!). Make sure to check the schedule first because some days they don’t have public shows and are available for school groups only.

7) Bundle up and stroll around Park Ave. and Monroe Ave.

There’s dozens of shops and restaurants to check out in this Southeast Neighborhood. Alicia reccommends getting a body piercing at Icon, picking up some threads at Aaron’s Alley and then grabing an enormous footlong at Dogtown. I’d prefer a pizza from Magnolia’s, grabing some vinyl at Lakeshore Record Exchange and then getting a chai tea at Spin Caffe. Whatever you choose this is one area you can keep coming back to.

Bonus) Write Something!

    I have another idea:

Shut down the government to tell them you aren't going to take their abuses anymore. Also use your own currency that you create.

Yeah, but you've gotta lighten up every now and then, right? I mean, in between shutting down the government and telling them you aren't going to take it any more you could go to the park. After that you could go to Park Ave and try to use your own currency with the vendors there. Right? :)

    True you have a point

I'm with Sean. If I truly believed in Andrew's paranoid fantasies and believed in a quarter of what Alex Jones says, I wouldn't take one minute away from taking down the New World Order.

Great article, by the way. Really great for a good laugh and to show what new lows ABC has fallen to.

On a more serious note, I'd recommend the comment section. about 20:1 people that don't like the article and they make some really great points.

And I'm glad you wrote this one. I think when you originally started writing back this summer, you really wanted it to be a forum for all things Rochester. It's inspiring me to get into the drafts sections and revive some of my old stuff…I also think it's easy for people in Rochester to say that life here sucks when they don't take time to participate in the world around them. There's lots to see and do everyday.

About the coffee shop thing though, sometimes baristas are scary. Mostly they are cool though. And why leave the computer at home when you can get free (albeit shotty) wireless?

Another suggestion that you didn't write: check out other neighborhoods and walk around (like the Southwedge…) There's tons to do over there. And I think we also forgot the public library!!

I'd really like to see you write the second part of that education article sometime. It definitely doesn't suck in Rochester, even in the winter!

Scary baristas? Some of them I guess.

The thing that bothers me about the public library is the limited hours. I guess I'm just spoiled by Rush Rhees.
