The Wonderful Seasons of Rochester

I’m a little tired of all of the news of budget cuts, freak crimes and incidents at local colleges, so I’d like to write something positive about our community. I don’t know if people have taken the time to notice this year, but we’ve had a very beautiful and extended fall season this year. For weeks and weeks we’ve seen splendid colors throughout the whole city thanks to the moisture levels during the summer and fair weather throughout the fall.

Wikipedia says of Rochester:

Rochester lies in the Humid continental climate zone, and has four distinct seasons, with often cold and snowy winters. Autumn features brilliant foliage colors, and summer sees comfortable temperatures that usually stay in the low to mid 80s (upper 20s Celsius). Precipitation is plentiful year round.

This doesn’t really do our region justice. Ask any Rochesterian about our climate (or more colloquially, our weather) and you’ll hear a passionate response. Some will profess the beauty of the seasons while others will pledge to move away, but I fall within the first group.

I really love all of the seasons in Rochester, but I guess it’s the transitions between them that are the most special. As much as I’ve enjoyed the fall color, I’m excited about the winter as well. I love the snow and I don’t mind the cold. It gives each of us in Rochester the opportunity to become stronger in will and character. The worst part of winter for me has to be enduring the continual griping of weaker souls. Rochester is known for its cold winters so get over it. There are plenty of other cities with more mild winters that these people can move to if they so choose.

Winter is also fun at college campuses because many students come from states or countries where it doesn’t snow at all. A small percentage of each freshman class gets to experience snow for the first time in their lives and it’s a truly special experience. It makes us all feel like kids again.

I personally pledge to try and ski more this winter. In high school I used to ski both nordic and alpine on a weekly basis, but throughout college it’s become much more sporadic. Not this year. I plan to dust off my skis and hit the slopes and parks at least a few times. It’s really one of the best ways to enjoy the winter in Rochester, although there are certainly less expensive methods to appreciate the outdoors. Among the other alternatives I feel like sledding is the standout. It’s fast and fun, yet it’s also great exercise.

Do you have a favorite part about winter? Do you prefer any of the other seasons? Let us know how you feel!

This is somewhat of a departure from the heavier stuff, but a well needed one! Every so often we should pause and think about what is beautiful in our lives. I personally love late fall. I like the crisp, clean, colorful fall autumn days, but for some reason I also like the bleak, gray sky. Winter is cool, too. I like layering lots of clothing. I love how we get to experience all four seasons here in Roch.

    Nice post Andrew!!

Thanks for this pick-me-up Andrew. It has been a bummer lately, checking out the news on Rochester from abroad, only to see the same old sad and frustrating situations. It's nice to remember the things I really enjoy about the place where I was raised.

Hey, no problem Natalie. I'm glad to hear you're reading our site! Hey we saw the new Bond film the other night and it features Siena and the Palio right at the beginning of the movie. It made me think of you! I've never experienced fall in Italy, but I guess this is your second time so I hope you enjoyed it. Try not to get down Natalie, just remember you're in Italy!

Andrew, I loved this post, especially the part about the 'continua; griping of weaker souls'. It is especailly annoying when these souls are also the weather reporters on TV & radio! So, how about trying out those snowshoes Santa brought last year, too? Great exercise and they can take you places you cannot ordinarily go to see the real beauty of nature in the winter. And how about sharing some of your awesome pics of the seasons in Rochester (ex. Letchworth in Fall, Winter , Spring & Summer) You are an award winning photographer! Do share! See you on the slopes!
