Not sure what to do with your weekend? Bored with the same old choices? Do what Alicia and I are doing this weekend and check out the Rochester Oktoberfest at the Main Street Armory. It runs from the 10th-12th and has a $7 admission at the door, but you can find the rest of the details at www.rochesteroktoberfest.com.

I’m going to be heading over tonight to check out GAM Blaskaspelle (www.germanamericanmusicians.com) play their festive German music. I’m friends with one of the outstanding musicians in the group and I can’t wait to hear what a Blaskaspelle sounds like anyway. According to their website,

The Blaskapelle keeps the dance floor full and the beer flowing with a fast-paced selection of festive traditional party music: waltzes, Rheinlanders, polkas, and a wealth of traditional favorites from a huge repertory that delights audiences of all ages — all played with the authentic verve and style of the Biergartens of old!

I think it’s safe to say that there will be plenty of beer there - according to the advertisements there will be ‘beer pong’ and ‘bier games.’ I’m going to save my appetite because it looks like there should be good food as well. I’m a little worried that the time frame is ‘6:00 ‘till ?!’ - what does that mean? Does that mean there will be a puzzling but surprising event that suddenly takes place at an unspecified time and then we all run out? I don’t know?!

Anyway, I would also take this moment to point out what a great asset the Main Street Armory has become

The Main Street Armory, a multi-purpose arena in Rochester, New York. This building was constructed in 1905 as a military depot. The 35,000-square-foot drill floor was refurbished in 2006 to seat 5,000 fans; it served as the home arena for the Rochester Raiders indoor football team in the 2007 season. Rochester's East Main Street is the road in the foreground.

to our community. This is another example of how an entrepreneur can take an idea and make something happen for the community, create jobs for others and profit himself, all while adding tax dollars to the community instead of subtracting them by making the project a government one. We need to stop looking at our failures as a community (fast ferry, inner loop, Paetec Park) and start looking at those around us that have made difficult projects such as these a reality. The official website for the Main Street Armory has information on all of the events that are held there, including paintball, concerts, boxing and more.
