Here is an older story from 2006 that was in the New York Times. Below is a new article describing how the opium trade has continued to increase under US occupation. The important thing to understand is that our troops are guarding these fields!

I’m sick and tired of hearing all of these politicians blaming the speculators for high oil prices. It’s not speculators! They have a job to do like everyone else — their job is just predicting what the price of oil is going to be in the future and securing future production at those prices. They don’t “hate the US” and they are certainly not “betting against the US”, but to a bunch of uneducated Americans who have no clue how our economic system works, this sounds fair enough. The speculators and ‘rouge traders’ have become the scapegoats of our day. …
